Botolinum toxin against migraine

Migraine attacks cause severe muscle tension, especially in the face, neck, and shoulder area. The muscles press on the blood vessels, inhibiting blood circulation and causing a lack of oxygen. This results in severe migraine headaches. Botulinum toxin inhibits the release of the messenger substance in the body that is responsible for muscle activation, thereby reducing muscle tension during a migraine attack. This can reduce the frequency of migraines and the severity of the pain.

Botulinum toxin is used in such cases in adults who do not respond to conventional treatments or do not tolerate them. Botulinum toxin is injected into 31–39 points in the muscles of the forehead, neck, and shoulders using very fine needles. The pain-relieving effect sets in after approximately 48–72 hours and lasts for at least three months. The treatment should then be repeated regularly to achieve long-term improvement.
